Born around 1500, Bartolomeo Scappi was one of the most famous chefs of the Renaissance. At the age of 30, he entered the service of Pope Paul III, producing culinary delights for Pope Paul as well as 3 subsequent popes. In 1536, Bartolomeo Scappi had the honour of preparing a 13 course menu with a total of 789 elaborate dishes for Emperor Charles V, who was staying as a guest of the Grimani family. In 1577 he died and was buried on the cemetery of the church Santi Vincenzo e Anastasio alla Regola, which was specialy reserved for chefs.
