In 1788, the first stage of the later Josefstadt Theatre was set up in the garden of the inn “Bey den goldenen Straussen” at Josefstädter Strasse 26, in an attempt to bring in more revenue. This resulted in the Josefstadt Theatre. The inn was later demolished and replaced with a newer, larger building in Biedermeier style. Today, the Josefstadt is more than simply a Viennese theatre – it is also an Austrian institution.
