More than just a Viennese theater – an Austrian institution
In 1788, the first stage of what would become the Theater in der Josefstadt was set up in the garden of the inn “Bey den goldenen Straussen” at Josefstädterstrasse 26, in an attempt to bring in more revenue. This was the start of this theater’s history. The inn was later demolished and replaced with a new, larger building in Biedermeier style in 1822.
